I’m a screenwriter and script consultant with more than fifteen years’ experience teaching screenwriting and creative writing at university level. These days, alongside my own writing, I work with writers through script consultancy, mentoring, workshops and writing groups.
My feature film Life & Lyrics, backed by BBC Films, received a theatrical release through Universal Pictures and screened at festivals including the Black Hollywood Film Festival in Los Angeles and the Cape Town World Cinema Festival.
Since then, I’ve continued developing and writing film and television projects, sometimes independently and sometimes in collaboration with producers and other writers. Much of that work remains under wraps for the usual industry reasons, which is a polite way of saying that screen projects can spend an alarming amount of time being developed before anybody is allowed to talk about them.
That combination of professional writing, consultancy and years spent working with developing writers has given me a pretty good view of where scripts tend to go wrong, and more importantly, how they can be put right.
This site grew out of that experience. It is a place to share what I’ve learned about writing for the screen, the realities of being a writer, and some of the things I wish I had known when I started.
REVIEWS & TESTIMONIALS
I had the pleasure of working with Ken as a script consultant on my latest feature screenplay. His insight into character arcs and inner conflict, narrative structure, emotional cause and effect, and the importance of grounding a social drama in truthful human behaviour was invaluable. His thoughtful approach to story, visual storytelling and the overall dramatic architecture of a feature helped me identify both the strengths of the screenplay and precisely where further development was needed.

"..this cleverly scripted tale of urban life showcases an array of up-and-coming talent.."
I always dreamed of being a screenwriter but could never finish anything I started to write. Ken’s guidance changed all of that. I’ve completed 3 scripts and just had a spec script bought for $30,000! I am beyond happy!

"The accomplished screenplay gives depth to even the peripheral characters"
Three years of struggle ended after 5 consultations with Ken. I have just won my first commission to develop a script! Can hardly believe it. I am now officially a paid screenwriter! Thank you so much for sharing your genius!
Jackie Mitchelson, Screenwriter
"Life and Lyrics…serves it up with the assurance and wit that has not been present in a UK film for a while"
Instead of leaning into the usual screenwriting dogma, Ken stands with you in the thick of it. I specifically remember him standing at the whiteboard and building action descriptions and dialogue with input from the class, gently coaxing us into finding the language that best expressed what we were trying to convey while getting under the skin of our character. It’s a hands-on ‘in the moment’ approach that really gets its teeth into how we should be thinking when we’re building our own work.

I found Ken to be an exceptional tutor, not just because of his detailed practical knowledge of screenwriting, but his ability to unpack and communicate that knowledge with precision, clarity and humour. Ken’s lessons are always relaxed and enjoyable; you feel like you are being guided through a complex maze by a trusted friend.

"...a punchy street drama packing grit and passion.."
I graduated from the Birkbeck Screenwriting MA in early 2024, and over the two years of the course, one of the standout highlights for me was Ken’s classes. His deep knowledge and experience as a screenwriter, combined with his patience and talent for breaking down complex ideas into something accessible and practical, made his sessions genuinely something to look forward to each week. His guidance not only deepened my understanding of the craft but also gave me more confidence in my own voice as a writer.
